A Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) corrections officer found herself behind bars after she was accused of having a relationship with an inmate.
According to a Bernalillo County news release, MDC officials found out about the allegations Tuesday and reported them to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO).
The officer, Chevonne Culbreath — a probationary employee who was hired on Oct. 23, 2023 — was also reported for allegedly attempting to bring an illegal substance into the jail. According to the MDC news release, Culbreath was removed from her post and interviewed at BCSO headquarters before returning to the MDC for booking.
MDC said Culbreath was terminated and she has been charged with second-degree criminal sexual penetration and an attempt to commit a felony. Her case is being transferred to state district court.
Kai Smith, the MDC Warden, said in the release that leadership at the jail is “deeply disappointed by the alleged actions” and is “committed to ensuring that corrupt officers are swiftly identified and removed from our ranks.”
