In July, Sandoval County’s unemployment rate increased to 5.3%, up from 4.5% in July of the previous year and from 4.7% in June. The rate matches the statewide average, according to the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions.

Compared to neighboring counties, Sandoval County’s unemployment rate is higher than Bernalillo County’s 4.9% and Santa Fe County’s 4.7%, but lower than Torrance County, which stands at 7.1%.

New Mexico’s statewide unemployment rate exceeds those of neighboring states. Texas and Arizona are at 4.4%, while Colorado is at 4.2%.

As the Signpost reported in December, countywide unemployment was measured at 3.6% in September 2023, down 0.8% from the previous year and slightly less than statewide unemployment of just 3.7%. Nearby Bernalillo and Santa Fe counties both had unemployment rates of 3.6%. New Mexico’s statewide employment rate was lower than both neighboring Texas and Arizona.

State and local unemployment rates have been falling from a record high in May 2020 during the height of the COVID pandemic.
