The 8th Annual Placitas Garden Tour will welcome visitors from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, showcasing some of the community’s finest gardens.
This year’s theme, “Seeding for Sustainability,” highlights Placitas’ eco-friendly gardens, with the tour featuring seven gardens that blend sustainable practices with local artistry.
“We try to be protective of our environment and teach good practices for high desert gardening,” said Sandra Liakus, chair of the Placitas Garden Tour.
Of the seven gardens, six are residential, including this year’s returning “legacy garden,” the Legacy Color Garden. The Placitas Community Library also hosts part of the tour, featuring a gallery of garden art created by participating artists. Visitors can sign up for a free raffle basket and purchase art created in the gardens.
Since it began in 2016, the tour has become a community tradition, showcasing the dedication of local gardeners. Now in its ninth year, the tour is marking its 8th annual event, having paused during the pandemic. Initially sponsored by the library and the Sandoval Extension Master Gardeners, the tour eventually became a nonprofit, with proceeds supporting these organizations.
Each garden will feature a working artist, including painters, a photographer, a wood sculptor and a glass artist. Members of the Albuquerque Daylily Society will be at the library selling daylilies and offering advice on daylily care.
Bernalillo Master Gardeners will talk to garden guests about topics including water conservation, soil health through mulching and planting pollinator friendly species.
