New Mexico students will be heading back to school soon and parents will be able to buy supplies without paying taxes

The Back-to-School Tax-Free Weekend starts at 12:01 a.m.  Friday, August 2, and ends at midnight on Sunday, August 4. Shoppers can expect to save as much as eight percent on their purchases, depending where they are..

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said these types of events help out communities.

“New Mexico families should be getting excited about the coming school year without having to worry so much about being able to afford school supplies and clothes for their children,” Lujan Grisham said.

According to a press release from Lujan Grisham qualifying merchandise includes:

  • School supplies that are under $30 per unit for use in general-education classrooms
  • Clothing and shoes that are less than $100 per unit
  • Computers that are under $1,000 and other related hardware priced under $500

Stores are not required to participate and some items sold online are also eligible.

Taxation and Revenue Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke echoed the governor’s sentiment, saying “this is a great opportunity for New Mexicans to save some money on clothes and other things they need for their families as children are heading back to school.”
