A man is accused of aggravated DUI after flipping his vehicle multiple times on I-40 in Torrance County.

According to a criminal complaint, Torrance County Sheriff’s deputies received several calls June 10 about a vehicle failing to maintain lanes on eastbound I-40. The reporting deputy said that while attempting to stop a gray vehicle driving at speeds between 50 and 90 mph, he saw the vehicle drive onto the shoulder and median multiple times, almost driving into northbound traffic lanes before flipping several times on the south shoulder around mile marker 213 near Cline’s Corners.

Police identified the driver as 21-year-old Elias H. Woody of McKinley County near Gallup. According to a criminal complaint, Woody exited the vehicle and was arrested. The arresting deputy said he smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from Woody and saw a Smirnoff drink in the back seat of the vehicle. The deputy said Woody refused a breathalyzer test.

Woody was booked into the Torrance County Detention Center for aggravated DUI, resisting, evading or obstructing an officer, reckless driving and speeding. It was not clear who his attorney was as of press time.
