As the entire country learned about the historic conviction of former president Donald Trump on Thursday, City Desk ABQ kept an eye out for what our local elected officials and politicians from both sides of the aisle had to say.
Rep. Melanie Stansbury was the first New Mexico politician to weigh in.
Sen. Ben Ray Luján said the verdict “must be respected.”
Sen. Martin Heinrich said the law prevailed.
Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández called Trump a “felon, a corrupt politician, and not a man of moral integrity.”
The Democratic Party of Valencia County said no one is above the law when it reposted the New York Times.
The Democratic Party of New Mexico reposted the campaign statement from President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
On the other side of the aisle, local Republicans railed aganst the verdict.
The Bernalillo County GOP advised buying a gun.
In a lengthy statement the chairman of the Republican Pary of New Mexico Steve Pearce called the trial a witch hunt.
Nella Domenici, who is running for the Senate against Heinrich, said it is a sad day.
Rep. John Block called the verdict a sham.
Yvette Herrell, a former representative, said the case was election interference.
