The Placitas Community Library will be the backdrop for a new exhibition celebrating the diversity of America.

The exhibit “Our America” represents a tapestry of cultural diversity bound together by the unique weft and warp of stories and experiences representing the various backgrounds and origins of the American landscape. Through the lens of art, the exhibition explores and celebrates the richness and complexity of America’s collective identity.

The exhibition will be on display June 8 through July 21 in the Gracie Lee Community Room.

Artists were invited to reflect on and draw inspiration from their personal connections with family legacies, ancestral roots and cultural traditions and how those have been woven together over time to create the American landscape celebrated July 4 and throughout the year.

The exhibition will feature both new and established artists coming together to celebrate the richness and complexity of the American experience.

The event is a one-time, month-long exhibition showcasing artists from the Albuquerque/northern New Mexico area. Several artists from Placitas will also be showing their work in this exhibition.

“Celebrating diversity is very important to the Placitas Community Library, and this exhibition features a wide range of artists representing various backgrounds and origins, telling their story of their personal experience of America,” said John Streicher, library exhibits co-coordinator.

Approximately 45 pieces from 15 artists will be on display.

“The whole is often bigger than the sum of its parts. This exhibition is important because what each individual has to say about America becomes collectively ‘Our America,’” Streicher said.

There will be a community celebration and a reception for the artists to unveil the exhibition from 5 – 6 p.m. Friday, June 21.
