As an avid reader and writer, Elizabeth McCall became interested in journalism in high school and that passion grew when she began her studies at New Mexico State University.

McCall grew up in the East Mountains but moved to Las Cruces to attend NMSU where she completed courses in news writing and editing, communications, broadcast journalism, photojournalism and marketing.

“NMSU has an amazing journalism department and I was surrounded with great peers and professors,” McCall said. “It wasn’t until my sophomore year when I began writing for the university’s student publication Kokopelli that I knew print journalism was what I wanted to focus on.”

During her journey at NMSU, McCall was also the student writer for NMSU’s Marketing and Communications department and a staff writer for the student newspaper, The Round Up. At the beginning of the year, she moved back to the East Mountains and began writing for The Independent. In May, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and media studies.

“My love for writing and reporting grew even more within these roles and made me realize the essentiality of news, especially local news,” McCall said. “It allows communities to be aware of what is happening around them, such as local government news, new local businesses and initiatives or other important issues.”

McCall strives to continue her career as a journalist, whether that is covering news in more local areas, or at the city or state level.
