There are goals, and there are goals.

Jonathon Brannon’s first-grade students at Matheson Park Elementary School have met theirs and will have the opportunity to watch the local professional soccer team score a few.

Midfielder/Defender Harry Swartz of New Mexico United appeared at the school Monday afternoon to present kids with tickets to the June 8 match after the students showed the highest reading proficiency gains across Albuquerque Public Schools.

Brannon said some students at the start of the school year were reading at the kindergarten level. He said almost all are at grade level now, and some are even reading at a third-grade level.

“They’ve all made at least a year’s growth,” he said, “And there are still several weeks to go.”

Brannon said while the kids were recognized for their reading growth, they’ve also made great strides in math and writing. He said having just 15 students in his class has allowed him to tailor instruction for each child and form small groups of students with similar needs.

“I’m proud of each and every one of you,” Principal Jacqueline Lovato told the first-graders. “You’re gonna do amazing things in this world.”

Swartz said meeting the students  – one of whom asked whether he was Ronaldo – was a reward after a hard day of practice.

“To see the smiles on the kids’ faces was more than worth it,” he said.

The game is part of a New Mexico United celebration called APS Schools’ Out Night 2024.

APS students and staff – including a teacher choir and elementary students who have made significant gains in reading – will participate in pre-game and halftime activities with soccer players.

Board of Education members will discuss the district’s progress according to its Emerging Stronger strategic plan. APS will have a reading table on the concourse with free books and tips for summer reading and a human resources table with information on working for the district.

Incoming Superintendent Dr. Gabriella Durán Blakey and her nephew will participate in the ceremonial first kick.

Discounted tickets for APS families and staff may be purchased here.
