A Bernalillo Police officer recently criticized for abusive language during a high-emotion traffic stop this summer was arrested by Rio Rancho Police on November 15 for misdemeanor battery on a household member after RRPD officers responded to a domestic violence call.

Officer Jeramie Nevarez was arrested and booked by Rio Rancho police on November 15th and held for two days until he was released. Court records show that Nevarez is not allowed to possess firearms as a condition of his pending battery case. Bernalillo Mayor Jack Torres confirmed to KRQE TV news that Nevarez was placed on administrative leave following the arrest.

Nevarez was highlighted by KRQE TV earlier this year after residents complained that the Bernalillo officer pointed a gun at them during a traffic stop. The family in the car told the officer they were taking their dog who had been hit by a car to the vet. The officer can be heard on the lapel video responding, “I don’t give a f***.”

The ACLU is now representing the family and tells KRQE they intend to sue the town.
