For the October/November exhibition at the Placitas Community Library’s Gracie Lee Community Room, artists were invited to portray women—specific women or imaginary composites—and their extraordinary achievements, physical attributes, historical contributions, and the challenges they face as mother, daughter, wife, partner, friend, dreamer, dancer, scientist, sportswoman, artist, performer, leader, legislator, litigator, adventurer, goddess, warrior, mystic, or muse.
As Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm said, “We must reject not only the stereotypes that others hold of us, but also the stereotypes that we hold of ourselves.” Over twenty artists responded to the challenge—men and women—resulting in an exhibition that features a wide array of media and points of view. The public is invited to a reception for the artists Friday, October 13, 5:00-6:30 and the work will, as always, be available for purchase with a percentage of the sale benefiting the library. Please note there will be a pause in public access to the exhibit from October 19 through November 8 due to the presence of voting machines in the gallery during that time.
