Losing last week at Bernalillo was not what Moriarty’s football team was expecting, but it may have served as a timely wakeup call.

In a matchup that featured two undefeated teams, host Bernalillo got in the end zone twice while visiting Moriarty could only cross the goal line once—and that was enough for the No. 5 Spartans (5-0) to hand the No. 7 Pintos (4-1) their first loss of the season.

“In the last three years, our games with Bernalillo have been super-tight games,” Romero said. “They’re a good team.”

The Spartans showed just how good they are by scoring on their opening drive to take an early 6-0 advantage.

Moriarty responded with a scoring drive, highlighted by Caedon Kamplain’s run that gave the Pintos a first down inside the Spartans 10-yard line.

Through their first four games the Pintos’ offense averaged almost 38 points per contest. But after Quintana’s first-half touchdown, Moriarty couldn’t muster up any more points against the Spartans—and Bernalillo’s second-half TD was enough to secure the 14-7 victory.
